A public apology to all the "In πŸ‘ This πŸ‘ House πŸ‘ We πŸ‘ Believe πŸ‘" people

Yesterday I wrote an email about people who put those "In πŸ‘ This πŸ‘ House πŸ‘ We πŸ‘ Believe πŸ‘" signs on their front lawns.

In this email, I alluded to the fact that if you wind up moving next to one of these people, you'll quickly find out that they are some of the most insufferable assholes on the face of the planet.

However...

I now realize that I shouldn't have done that.

It was premature.

It wasn't fair.

And truth be told... it's not even accurate.

The reason I say this is because these people are not the #1 worst people you could wind up living next to.

In fact, they are actually only #2 on the list of worst people alive.

There is one type of person who is worse in every way possible than these people.

I'm talking about the "Hate πŸ‘ Has πŸ‘ No πŸ‘ Home πŸ‘ Here πŸ‘" sign people.

These people...

Boy oh boy...

Let me tell you...

These people are the ones you really have to watch out for.

These signs are smaller, and more subtle.

Yet they scream moral superiority, while the ITHWB sign whispers.

Think about this is way:

How much do you have to fucking HATE your next door neighbor to stick this sign in your front yard?

The ITHWB sign is a primal scream against society and the many injustices of the world... but the HHNHH sign is a direct attack on Marianne and Randy who live next door.

"Mare- get over here! Look at this shit. Look at what Cheryl and Tom put on their front lawn. That fucking Hate has no home here sign. GOD DAMNIT!!! Now everyone is going to think we're bigots."
*slams fist on kitchen table*

Hell hath no fury like an upper middle class parent in a mostly white suburban town who sticks that sign into the well-manicured lawn of their McMansion.

Forget the fact that the sign itself is in six different languages - five of which the sign owner couldn't identify if you held a gun to their head.

It's 2023.

Why is this still on your lawn?

Donald Trump hasn't been president for 3 whole years. Guy can't even send a Tweet.

Show me on the doll where the orange man hurt you.

Amazing stuff.

You cannot fathom how much hate, snark, and smugness a person has to harbor to actually buy one of those things and stick it into their lawn.

Idk

Maybe I'm wrong.

It reminds me of this passage from the bible...

In Exodus 12:13, God said:

The blood on the doorposts will be a sign to mark the houses in which you live. When I see the blood, I will pass over you and will not harm you when I punish the Egyptians. You must celebrate this day as a religious festival to remind you of what I, the LORD, have done. Celebrate it for all time to come.”

Perhaps this sign is akin to smearing the blood of the sacrificial Lamb on the threshold of your door?

Perhaps the sign will protect you from the wrath of some unseen force?

If you place the sign on your lawn Donald Trump won't come get you?

Maybe?

IDK?

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

It is interesting tho, isn't it?

I can't explain it.

All I can do Is pass along this warning for all of you who might be house hunting - if you see these signs, these are RED FLAGS... and you are in for a world of hurt if you choose to pitch your tent next to Cheryl and Tom.

Anyway...

The ironic thing about this sign is that, in my home, hate very much DOES have a home here.

Stay with me for a second, stay with me...

Most of the good things in my life have come on the other side of "hate."

Now...

OBVIOUSLY I'm NOT talking about hating large groups of people.

Quite the opposite, actually.

As a general rule, I love groups of people... but loathe specific individuals with every fiber of my being.

I'm sure if you can look at your life with a sense of objectivity, you might be the same way.

Hate has fueled myself (and many others) to accomplish incredible things.

For example:

I absolutely HATED my day job. I hated commuting 1-3 hours a day. I hated showing up two hours early and staying three hours late... and still got told I wasn't working hard enough.

I hated making peanuts.

I hated when the administration would throw us under the bus.

I hated having zero control over my life and schedule.

I hated all of these things so much that I decided to start my business and quit my job.

I hated the guy who fired me from my first teaching job. I'll never forget the irascible rage I felt when I walked out of his office the day I got let go.

I remember telling myself, "One day, I am going to make more money than this mother fucker."

I remember he made ~$90k/year as a principal.

Nowadays...

I make ~$90k/month (top line).

I guess I had the last laugh.

Would I have gotten there without feeling that rage?

Would I have been able to hit these highs without that hate in my heart?

I hated the kid from Princeton HS who pinned me in the quarterfinals of Regions my junior year of HS. He effectively ended my season.

I was up 9-0 going into the third period.

For context, if you gain a 15 point lead in wrestling they stop the match and call it a "technical superiority"... kind of like a 'mercy rule.'

I made one bad move and got rolled to my back and pinned with about 50 seconds left in the match.

I remember crying, screaming with rage because I fucked up.

I watched as that kid went on to win the region tournament - a title that could have been mine - and he qualified for states.

But...

Ya know what?

I thought about that mother fucker every single day.

I thought about it him for 365 days straight.

I saw him when I woke up.

He followed me around through school each day.

He was with me when I was training. And when I got tired and didn't want to continue... I saw him standing there, smiling.

So I pushed harder.

I would go to the track in the afternoon and run the stadium stairs until dusk.

I outworked everyone.

And even though I never got to wrestle that guy again, I took out my vengeance on every other opponent that season.

I hate all of the people who "beat me" in the bidding wars when we were trying to buy our house.

It pissed me off to no end that there were people out there with seemingly unlimited "financial firepower."

They could buy a house for all cash, above asking and not give a shit about any other expenses down the line.

And, I couldn't.

That still fuels me to this day.

And that's just the thing...

In life, you have to decide if you're going to actually TAKE ACTION on the things you hate... or if you're just going to whinge about it.

This is my problem with the "sign people."

They are the worst type of people alive because they don't actually give a fuck about the words on the sign.

Putting a sign in their lawn is the beginning and the end of their involvement in the issue at hand.

"Welp, I did my part!"

No.

You didn't do shit.

You didn't do shit except place a signaling mechanism on your lawn so you can maintain the appearance of being a "good person."

You've done nothing.

Hatred should be the fuel that leads you to accomplish amazing things in your life.

Copywriting goes like this:

PROBLEM - Agitate - Solution

Without the pain, there is no pleasure.

Without the hatred of the situation you're in, there is no catalyst for change.

The time to whinge is over.

The time to build has begun.

You can sit around and bitch and moan about the world.

OR...

You can get off your ass and start building the world you want to live in.

Time to choose.
